In 1984 I was born into a tight-knit family and raised with the idea that hard work is the only way to achieve.
And from a very early age, my parents made it clear that dentistry was to be my profession.
However, growing up as a teenager, I felt trapped between two cultures. On the one hand, I was supposed to follow the rules that were set at home. On the other hand, I grew up in a western culture encouraging individualism, expression, and freedom.
Struggling with this duality, I started doing things my own way. I discovered the significance of music and art to express myself, but the gap between my parents and me widened. I felt unheard and misunderstood.
Seeking refuge online, I started isolating myself more and saw my grades fall. I ended up flunking my exams. I then switched to a private school where my teachers inspired me to fulfill my own potential. I worked hard for two years and passed my exams with flying colors for the first time.

I enrolled in dentistry, and I got placed in Groningen. That is where I finally felt free, where I really learned to grow up and take care of myself. In 2011 I graduated from university as a dentist. And I knew where I wanted to go from there. After a year and a half of hard work and dedication my clinic, Ardent, saw the light of day in October 2012.
But to my surprise, seemingly easy overnight success and boredom quickly started to wear me down. I got unhappy, disillusioned, and depressed. I needed to educate myself more on the things that really mattered to me. I simply wanted to feel alive again.

The world is out there for us to claim our what’s ours. I’ve been working on this for the past 36 years, and I’m not planning on quitting any time soon. Don’t be fooled! There are no shortcuts in life, there is no unicorn. Everything starts with the belief that you are in charge. Just don’t ever let anyone tell you it cannot be done. This is the message I’m bringing on-stage every time I face the audience.
